Dr. Marshall is currently an assistant professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado Denver and co-director of the Active Communities Transportation (ACT) research group and program director of the University of Colorado Denver's University Transportation Center through the Mountain Plains Consortium.  Wes is also an affiliated faculty member of the UCD Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Systems (CSIS) that houses the IGERT Program on Sustainable Urban Infrastructure.   

Wes is a professionally licensed civil engineer specializing in transportation research dedicated to building a more sustainable infrastructure, particularly in terms of improving road safety, planning for better active transportation, and designing for transit-oriented communities.  Recent research topics have included: 
  • Transit-oriented communities and understanding the related livability effects;
  • Resiliency with major transportation infrastructure investments;
  • Street networks and the link to road safety, active transportation, VMT, and health outcomes;
  • Bicycle safety performance functions... and safety in numbers;
  • Congestion pricing;
  • Parking and urbanism;
  • A reassessment of on-street parking.

Having spent time with the UConn Center for Transportation and Urban Planning, Sasaki Associates, and Clough, Harbour and Associates, Wes has been working on planning and site design issues related to civil and transportation engineering for more than the last fifteen years.  A native of Watertown, Massachusetts, Wes is a 1998 graduate of the University of Virginia, a 2006 recipient of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship, and the recipient of the Charley V. Wootan Award for Outstanding TRB Paper in the field of Policy and Organization.
